What is an initial adviser charge?

An initial adviser charge is the one-off fee for the first piece of advice work, such as reviewing your finances and recommending what to do, quoted as a percentage of the money advised on or as a fixed sum.

Among firms charging a percentage, the median standard initial rate ran from 1.0% to 3% in 2025 (FCA retail intermediary market data 2025, Table 25, published July 2026).

What it pays for

The initial charge covers the work before and around a recommendation: gathering your information, analysing it, researching options, writing the suitability report and, if you go ahead, putting the recommendation in place. Some firms charge separately for that last step and call it an implementation fee.

How it is usually quoted

The FCA's 2025 market data counts firms by how they typically charge for initial advice. 3,272 firms said a percentage of the investment, 1,630 a fixed fee, 1,006 an hourly rate and 699 a combination. A firm can appear in more than one count.

Percentage charges are often tiered, with a lower rate on larger amounts, and many firms set a minimum fee. The "1.0% to 3%" range above describes the typical firm's lowest and highest standard rates, not two separate groups of firms.

Why so many quotes say 3%

The FCA's 2020 evaluation of the Retail Distribution Review found that 38% of one-off charges were set at exactly 3%, and that the average initial charge was 2.4%. Charges cluster at round numbers, so a quote at a round number tells you little about whether it suits your case. Converting it to pounds and comparing what is included tells you more.

Questions worth asking

  • What is the total initial charge in pounds on my amount?
  • Is there a minimum fee, and is implementation included?
  • What do I pay if I decide not to go ahead after the recommendation?
  • Is the charge paid by me directly, or taken from the investment (facilitated)?
